World No. 1 golfer and 2024 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is likely to miss the cut at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst after finishing with a 4-over 74 in Round 2 on Friday (June 14), dropping him to 5-over for the week, two strokes higher than the current projected cut of 3-over par.
Scheffler, 27, hasn't missed a cut since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, which was 672 days prior to the second round of the U.S. Open. The No. 1 overall player was paired with World No. 2 Xander Schauffele -- the winner of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla in May -- and No. 3 Rory McIlroy, who aims to end his 10-year major drought.
Scheffler double-bogeyed the par-5 No. 5 hole, which also saw Schauffele back up two shots while McIlroy, who intially faced some struggles, managed to save par.
McIlroy, 35, who entered Friday as the co-leader tied with Patrick Cantlay at 5-under, finished the round at 2-over for the day, but 3-under overall, three strokes behind leader Thomas Detry at 6-under and tied for fifth. Schauffele, 30, who shot even on Thursday (June 13), finished at 1-under for the round and tied for 10th.
